School of Medicine – Sterling Hall of Medicine

Overview of the Sterling Hall of Medicine Building

The Yale School of Medicine’s main building at 333 Cedar Street—today’s Sterling Hall of Medicine—was dedicated in 1925.  The building marked the centerpiece of the University’s move to consolidate its medical facilities into a unified campus in the heart of New Haven’s medical district. The building’s exhibits a mix of architectural styles and anchors a complex that soon expanded to include research labs, teaching facilities, and the adjoining Yale–New Haven Hospital. Through the mid-20th century, the area grew rapidly with additions such as the Brady Memorial Laboratory, reflecting Yale’s rising stature in biomedical research. By the late 1900s and early 2000s, new towers, clinics, and research institutes transformed 333 Cedar and its surroundings into a dense, interconnected medical campus. Today, it remains the intellectual and administrative core of one of the nation’s leading medical schools.
