Yale Armory
Overview of the Yale Armory
The Yale Armory was built in 1916–17 for the Yale Artillery Battalion, precursor to Yale’s ROTC program, and marked the first time a U.S. university had its own dedicated armory facility. Its large drill hall, stables for up to 120 horses and shooting range underscored its military-and-training purpose during World War I. After the war, the building transitioned into athletic and club uses—namely the Yale polo and equestrian teams—and by 2009 was deemed unsafe and sat unused, then was demolished around 2019 and the site repurposed as a grass training field.
